Gel or ice silk: which mat for which animal?
The difference in principle: a reserve versus conduction
Two families, and nearly everything else follows from that.
Mats with a reserve store cold, or the capacity to absorb heat, inside a filling: gel, water, frozen material. Once the reserve is used up they have to rest or be recharged, and that same filling is the point at which the product fails.
Mats with no reserve store nothing: they conduct your pet's body heat away and spread it out. There is nothing to empty, nothing to recharge and nothing that can escape, and the effect comes back on its own as soon as the animal shifts.
The four technologies, and where each one stops
Gel
The most common construction. A pressure-activated gel absorbs heat as soon as the animal lies down on it, and carries on for as long as its store holds out.
Where it stops: after three or four hours of continuous use the effect is spent and the mat has to be left unused so the gel can regenerate, which is written on the product listings themselves. If the animal gets its teeth into it the gel comes out, spreads through the coat and is swallowed during grooming; the film fragments then weigh on the gut more than the gel does. And hardly any product states which gel it contains. The full account is on the page about the gel-free cooling mat.
Fill with water
A casing is filled with water before use. The mass of water absorbs heat.
Where it stops: filling and emptying every season, heavy once full, so no car and no travel. If the water sits inside for weeks, mold can form. And a seam that gives way means water on the floor.
Freezer type
The mat, or an insert, goes in the freezer and then gives back the stored cold until it runs out.
Where it stops: it takes up permanent freezer space, it is stiff and uncomfortable while frozen, and after one or two hours the effect is over and it goes back on ice. With small animals, puppies or seniors, direct skin contact can be far too cold in one spot, which is why a cloth in between and supervision are needed.
Ice silk
A fabric with a high proportion of polyamide conducts body heat away without storing anything.
Strengths: no preparation, no reserve running down, nothing that can escape. It folds and it is light, so it works in the car and on trips. The effect returns on its own the moment the animal moves, and it carries on all summer without a single recharge.
What there is nothing to do about: no freezer, no filling to check, no break to respect. Day to day a damp cloth is enough; for a deep clean it goes in the machine on a cold delicate cycle. In the third hour of an August afternoon it is still working, and that is the hour that counts.
Side by side
| Point | Ice silk | Gel | Water | Freezer |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Preparation | none | none | fill it | freezer |
| Over one afternoon | continuous | 3-4 hours, then a break | a few hours | 1-2 hours |
| Recharging | none | rest required | empty and refill | back in the freezer |
| Washing | machine, cold delicate cycle | depends on the model | depends on the model | depends on the model |
| Puncture risk | nothing to puncture | pouch under pressure | casing full of water | depends on the filling |
| If the animal chews it | nothing comes out | gel comes out | water comes out | depends on the filling |
| Weight, travel | light, rolls up | medium | heavy | medium |
| For rabbits and small pets | suitable | best avoided | best avoided | best avoided |

What to check, whichever technology you pick
One point decides whether you are even in a position to judge what you are buying: is the fiber composition written down? Not "polyester" or "nylon" as a word, but the percentages. Without them there is nothing to compare, because the same word covers fabrics that behave completely differently.
Here is ours. When you compare, look for the same thing on the other listing, and treat its absence as an answer in itself.
Our composition
| Top layer | 75% polyamide, 25% polyester |
|---|---|
| Filling | 100% cotton |
| Bottom layer | 100% polyester |
Read off the label of an actual unit.

The second point is surface area. An animal that only half fits on it only half cools down, and size letters are not standardised between sellers. How many inches you actually need is in the size guide.
And if you want to know what a "best in test" badge is really worth, with the criteria to check any mat yourself, that is on the page about how to choose the best one.
Frequently asked questions
Which cooling mat cools for the longest?
Ice silk, because it has no reserve to use up: it cools for as long as heat can flow away, and the effect returns every time your pet changes position. Constructions with a filling work off a store that runs out, and then have to rest or go back in the freezer, usually right in the hottest hour of the afternoon.
Is gel dangerous for dogs?
The risk is not in the formula, it is in the pouch. If the casing opens the gel comes out, spreads through the coat and gets swallowed during grooming, and the film fragments weigh on the gut more than the gel itself does. On top of that, hardly any product states which gel it contains, so on the phone to the vet you have nothing to tell them. Then there is the limit that applies to everyone: after three or four hours of continuous use a gel mat has to rest before it cools again.
Why does ice silk cool if it contains nothing?
Because the cool does not come from a reserve, it comes from the fiber. Polyamide conducts heat far better than cotton or polyester, so body heat enters it quickly and gets spread across the surface. It is the same reason tile feels cold and wood does not, at the same temperature.
Which technology lasts longest over the years?
The one with no filling. Gel and water mats age exactly where a fabric has to stay sealed, and over time they leak. A sewn fabric with no chambers does not have that weak point: what ages is the cloth itself.
