Why the search almost always starts at the shelf

Every summer, plenty of people search whether cooling mats are stocked at a pet store, a discount chain or a hardware store. It is a very concrete intent: they want to know whether the thing exists nearby and what it costs.

Except the question that decides it is not where, it is how big. An animal that half fits only half cools: heat leaves through the belly and the inner thighs, where the coat is thinnest, and if those two areas stay on the warm floor the mat is working on a third of the animal. Size comes before everything else.

Where the choice stops: sizes top out around 27 × 43 in

Shelf space costs money, so what gets displayed is what turns over fastest: small and medium sizes. It is the right size for a Chihuahua or a cat. For a 65 lb Labrador, it is a cushion.

And stock moves. What is there in June may be gone in August, and what one store carries the next one two miles away may not. The odds are lower still on the large sizes, precisely because those take up the most shelf.

The composition. Not "polyester" or "nylon" as a word, but the percentages, because the same word covers fabrics that behave completely differently. Ours are on every product page, before you buy, read off the label of an actual unit. When you compare, look for the same thing on the other listing and treat its absence as an answer.

The shelf is overwhelmingly gel, and gel works off a reserve that gets used up: the listings themselves give "a duration of 3 to 4 hours of constant use", after which the mat has to be left unused so the gel can regenerate. Three checks before you pay, wherever you buy

Count the inches, do not trust the letter. XL means something different to every maker, and an animal that only half fits only half cools. How many inches yours needs is in the size guide.

Look for the fiber percentages. If there is nothing, or just "polyester" with no percentage, what you have is a blanket. Ours: 75% polyamide and 25% polyester on top, cotton inside, polyester underneath.

Ask what the measurement was taken against. A number of degrees with no starting figure is not information. Ours starts at 89 °F on the floor and reaches 78 °F on the mat, same room.
